SUMMARY:De la physique quantique à l'ordinateur quantique
DESCRIPTION:Conférence grand public par Étienne Klein (CEA\, France). Au cours des années 1920\, la physique quantique s’est rapidement mise sur pied. Il fallait rendre compte du comportement qui se révélait très bizarre des atomes et des particules qui les constituent. Des concepts radicalement neufs furent inventés\, qui conduisirent les physiciens à penser autrement la matière et ses interactions. Mais pour devenir opératoire\, c’est-à-dire correctement utilisable\, l’édifice théorique qui fut ainsi construit exigeait aussi un travail d’interprétation\, que les physiciens eurent les pires difficultés à mener à bien. Il faut dire que la physique quantique posait des questions à la fois inédites et vertigineuses : comment comprendre son formalisme? Comment celui-ci se relie-t-il aux expériences? Selon quelles règles l’utiliser? Quel statut conférer au hasard qui semble intervenir dans la détermination des résultats? Quels types de discours sur la réalité cette nouvelle physique autorise-t-elle? \nLes débats autour de ces questions furent intenses\, notamment entre Niels Bohr et Albert Einstein. Mais au tournant des années 1980\, des expériences décisives permirent de les trancher pour partie. Notamment celles qui démontrèrent le phénomène de « non-séparabilité quantique »\, qui ouvre la voie à toutes sortes d’applications ainsi qu’à l’espoir de disposer un jour d’ordinateurs dits « quantiques ».

SUMMARY:Herzberg Memorial Public Lecture | Shohini Ghose
DESCRIPTION:Shohini Ghose is a Professor of Physics and the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering at Wilfrid Laurier University\, and the Chief Technology Officer of the Quantum Algorithms Institute. Her research focuses on foundational topics in quantum information science as well as developing real-world applications of quantum technologies with industry partners. She is a member of Canada’s Quantum Advisory Council for the National Quantum Strategy\, and she served on the Advisory Board of the UNESCO International Basic Sciences Program. Dr. Ghose is the founding Director of the nationally recognized Laurier Centre for Women in Science and she was President (2019-20) of the Canadian Association of Physicists. Her awards including a TED Senior Fellowship and selection to the College of the Royal Society of Canada\, and her online talks and videos have received over 8 million views. Her recent book Her Space\, Her Time won the 2023 Science Writers and Communicators of Canada book award.
